On Monday, October 19, 2015, Canadians elected a new federal governing party, as the Liberal Party of Canada won a majority government. On Wednesday, November 5, 2015, Prime Minister Trudeau announced his cabinet. Among the selections were two Alberta-based MPs. The Honourable Amarjeet Sohi, MP for Edmonton-Mill Woods, was named Minister of Infrastructure and Communities, and the Honourable Kent Hehr, MP for Calgary-Centre, was named Minister of Veterans Affairs and Associate Minister of National Defence.

The AAMDC would like to extend congratulations to Minister Sohi and Minister Hehr on these appointments. It is encouraging to see strong Alberta representation in the federal cabinet, and the AAMDC is confident that rural Alberta’s interests will be well-considered. As a former municipal councillor, Minister Sohi is well-positioned to understand the challenges faced by Alberta’s rural and urban municipalities. The AAMDC is confident that he will consider rural Alberta when leading the implementation of the new government’s infrastructure commitments such as green infrastructure investments, the establishment of the Canadian Infrastructure Bank, and others.

The AAMDC looks forward to working with the Government of Canada and its representatives in coming months.
