Alberta Transportation has confirmed it will continue with all previously approved Water for Life and Alberta Municipal Water/Wastewater Partnership (AMWWP) projects. Necessary interim financing on unpaid grant funds will be included in the final grant payment once projects are complete.

In the 2013-14 provincial budget, funding for the Water for Life and AMWWP programs were cut by approximately 50 per cent. This affected the ability for municipal projects to be initiated.

Members were concerned that funding for previously approved projects under these programs might also be in jeopardy. The AAMDC inquired about the steps being taken to ensure projects that were previously initiated under these programs would be completed, and that timelines would be in place to ensure funding approvals cover actual project costs.

Adequate funding needs to be in place to ensure Alberta’s rural areas are guaranteed equitable access to safe and secure water.  Programs such as Water for Life and AMWWP help address these funding needs, but decreased funding levels impact municipalities’ ability to provide necessary water and wastewater infrastructure to meet residential needs.
