General Election Information

The next General Election will happen on October 16, 2017.

Nomination Day will be September 18, 2017.

For Summer Villages, the Nomination Period can occur in June and/or July, with Election Day to be held four weeks after the Nomination Period closes. Check with your local summer village for specific dates.

Candidate Training from SLGM

The Society of Local Government Managers of Alberta (SLGM) is hosting a number of local government training sessions at no cost from August 31 to September 14. The sessions are designed to help candidates:

  • Understand the significance, character, roles and responsibilities of an elected official in local authorities
  • Appreciate the significance of and legal obligations associated with local authority office
  • Understand the basic requirements of running an ethical campaign
  • Develop the understandings that will permit potential candidates to decide whether local authority office is something to which they truly aspire
  • Understand the requirements of running well-organized effective campaigns
  • Understand rights and obligations of candidates and candidate’s agents with the election administration regime

SLGM has also developed AlbertaLeaders.ca as a resource for anyone interested in becoming a candidate in the 2017 Municipal Elections or School Board Elections, or needing more information about candidacy.

Ballot Box Ordering

The AAMDC has joined together with Instabox to offer an opportunity to order the needed ballot boxes and voting screens, as well as storage boxes for screens. 

All orders are to be sent to Instabox directly; they will process all orders, and ship directly to your municipality. Freight charges will be added to the order depending on location. Orders must be placed by September 1, 2017.
