Assessment Technician

This position is responsible for assisting the application of established formulas to the information collected in field investigations to determine assessments of residential and less complex commercial properties in accordance with the MGA


  • Perform site inspections of farm, residential and less complex non-residential properties to gather and verify assessment data.
  • Determine assessability and assist in valuation of properties in a mass appraisal environment by application of appraisal and assessment theory and principals.
  • Assist to establish regulated property assessments by application of Provincial Regulations.
  • Explain assessed values to property owners and assist in the defense of the physical characteristics appealed assessments at Assessment Review Boards.
  • Conduct regular reviews; cyclical inspections, of property and recognize changes attributing to value.
  • Employ uniform and equitable procedures for assessing all classes and kinds of property.
  • Ensure data collected is updated and validated on CAMA system.
  • Calculate tax bills for properties by multiplying assessed values by jurisdiction tax rates.
  • Complete special projects as required.


Job Skills:

  • have knowledge of assessment and taxation legislation, mass appraisal and application of cost, direct sales comparison, and income approaches to value.
  • knowledge of local, social, and economic factors affecting property values; knowledge of mathematical and statistical tools used in assessment work.
  • ability to handle stressful situations and can get along well with all types of people using good conflict resolution skills. Using judgment, initiative, motivation, excellent oral and written communication skills, will ensure success in this position.
  • Attention to detail and the ability to make decisions and accept responsibility for them is vital.
  • Excellent computer skills (familiarity with Microsoft Office, GIS, Pictomotry and CAMAlot software) will ensure effective completion of the job.
