Senior Advisor - Intergovernmental Affairs

This position is a focal point for administration efforts regarding regional, inter-municipal and inter-governmental projects and relationships, and major regional projects.


  • Facilitate appropriate and timely information flow within the organization, as well as to and from other regional parties, including but not limited to, the Edmonton Metropolitan Region Board (EMRB), Edmonton Global; AAMD&C; Towns within the County, neighboring municipalities, and other Counties.
  • Research, analyze, and consult with other department managers to formulate, document, and propose County strategy, position, and approaches for review with Senior Leadership and in support of Council.
  • Attend and participate in regional inter-municipal and inter-governmental meetings
  • Provide advice and support to Council in accordance with developed positions and County interests
  • Facilitate effective 2-way communication with EMRB staff, the 13 EMRB communities and other neighboring municipalities. Enhance relationships and promote the reputation of Sturgeon County as a leader in regional cooperation.
  • Organize meetings, establish agendas, prepare, or secure briefings and maintain action registers, ensuring follow-through on key inter-municipal commitments and requests.
  • Serve as a point of contact related to major inter-municipal and inter-governmental efforts, support and follow-up with department managers on issues and cross functional tasks.
  • Coordinate various County Advocacy Plans, in support of Council endeavors to engage regional, provincial, and federal stakeholders to advance Sturgeon County interests, ensuring alignment with Sturgeon County’s Strategic Plan.
  • Review policy and legislative material and consult, where necessary, with legal counsel for interpretation of material. Prepare positions, documentation Council reports and letters resulting from decisions.


Skills & Qualifications Required:

  • Requires a Bachelors or graduate degree in business, public administration, or another related field
  • Working knowledge of Municipal Government Act (MGA), Municipal Government Board (MGB), municipal governance and the EMRB regulation, authority, membership, and operations.
  • Minimum 5 years’ experience working in Municipal or Provincial government or other public-sector organization.
  • Ability to communicate to a broad range of stakeholders clearly and succinctly verbally, in written report and presentation form
